What to Wear

We advise that children wear play clothes so as not to spoil “best” dresses, trousers etc. We don’t anticipate any real damage to clothes but paint and water inevitably get spilled. Aprons will be provided for messy play. Please bear in mind that we have a wonderful outdoor area and use it at every opportunity – your child will always need appropriate outdoor clothing – and they will get dirty! All clothes including coats, shoes and underwear should be clearly labelled with the child’s name. Soft shoes should be worn in the nursery and warm clothing including jackets and wellies should be provided for outdoor play during bad weather. Parents are asked to provide a change of clothes for all children. The nursery provides nappies and wipes at no additional charge, but we do ask that, for hygiene reasons, each child has their own barrier cream, clearly labelled with the child’s name.

Nursery Folios

A Nursery Folio is kept for each child which charts their progress from the day they start Nursery to the day they leave. Assessment sheets are completed regularly and parents are invited to let us know of any advances their child has made at home. The folios are child friendly and the older children are involved in completing their own assessment sheets. A selection of the child’s drawings etc. are also kept , along with staff observations of the child in various activities ,  providing parents with a wonderful profile of each child’s time at Nursery. These records are intended to be shared with parents on a regular basis in order that they can keep up to date with their child’s progress.

Parent’s Evenings and Meetings

Parent’s Evenings are held once a year for all age groups. These take the form of a social event where parents are invited to speak to members of staff about their child’s progress at Nursery, look at their folio, try out some of the activities they have been involved in and also meet parents of their children’s friends.  Children in the pre-school building also have a second parents evening, towards the end of the school year (June). This is a more structured occasion, with individual appointments to explain and discuss formal pre-school assessments and the child’s progress.

We also have a parent’s forum – this consists of parent representatives from each department, along with senior staff members, which meets quarterly. If you have anything you would like discussed at these meetings, please see any parent representative or Marion Barker, Manager.

Staff Training

Craigton Lodge Nursery School provides a structured training programme for unqualified staff. Opportunities are provided for staff to undertake SVQ qualifications in Children’s Care, Learning and Development. We also provide regular in-house training events where staff are kept up to date with current issues and trends, and training is provided in areas that are highlighted during staff appraisals.
